How to have a quickie divorce?
The popular idea of a quickie divorce can be true – though usually only if you have no financial assets, home, pensions, or children, so it really is very simple and you just want to fill in the forms online and have done with it. Plus you need to agree on the grounds for divorce if you haven’t been separated for at least 2 years.
Though it is worth paying a bit more to have a proper Consent Order, just in case one of you becomes a millionaire in the future and your Ex decides to claim some of the cash. Just because you are legally divorced, they can still have a right to make a claim, if you haven’t tidied things up and made your financial agreement into a legally binding document.
However many quick divorces can drag out when one of the couple fails to fill in the forms, or generally makes it all go much slower than it needs to. And if you are not living with them anymore, it’s quite hard to get them to do the necessary divorce admin – even if they are willing – just hopeless at getting things done.
You could introduce them to a Divorce PA, who could help them gather any necessary information and to keep things moving. Or work with a financial advisor to get the financial aspects organised (which you should do anyway) and if everything is amicable you could work with the financial expert together, or with an Accountant if it’s just a case of accessing financial information.
But if there are properties involved, pensions, kids etc – well that all ads layers of complexity – which can still be dealt with efficiently, but that can take more time than you might think.
If you own a business, that will need to be valued. Some accountancy firms can do online valuations if it’s not too complex, which is quicker and can keep the costs down. But if a more comprehensive valuations is required, then you need to allow time for that.
Equally, if you are working with a financial planner and creating a vision of a financially secure future for both of you – then those financial decisions shouldn’t be rushed. If agreement is not forthcoming – access a mediator to help you come to a financial agreement over how split your assets.
The desire to ‘have it over and done with’ could be a desire that encourages poor decision making. Getting divorced is a major life event. Don’t rush it.
