What is the easiest way to save money when divorcing?
The easiest way to save money when dealing with family separation, is to not waste money on advice you don’t need. For example, if you are intending to agree the terms of the divorce in a civilised manner, then spending a whole lot of money on lawyers sending letters backwards and forwards, when you could simply talk to each other through a mediator, doesn’t make much sense.
Sometimes people go to court and spend £25,000 only to be told the same thing that a mediator could tell them right at the start. Sounds mad I know, but this kind of thing happens all the time. And it could happen to anyone, as you tend to trust the ‘professionals’ and the lawyers – but they are trained to think legally, not necessarily for what is best for your family as a whole going forwards. So you may find that even lawyer mediators have a different approach to supporting you through divorce, compared to a traditional family lawyer without that extra level of training.
And if a client is determined to ‘let the Judge decide’, it is the solicitor’s job to follow their client’s wishes – even though they suspect that the judge will not give the answer their client is expecting.
So do some research and talk to more than one adviser about how to conduct your divorce, and listen particularly hard to what the mediators suggest, if you want to save money on your divorce.
